National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangโ€™ula says Kenya recognizes the need to enhance parliamentary diplomacy through a strong parliamentary friendship group.

Dr. Wetangโ€™ula recognized the similarities in the operations of Kenya's and Egypt's bicameral Parliaments, thereby offering an opportunity to deepen cooperation and strengthen mutual relationships in areas of interest.

Speaker Wetangโ€™ula made the remarks on Wednesday morning as he hosted Hatem Yousri Hosni, the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Republic of Kenya, who called on him at his office in Parliament buildings.

"Egypt is well known for its advanced irrigation systems, which enable large-scale agricultural production; a technique Kenya is ready to benchmark, adopt, and advance to enhance agricultural output and achieve food security in the country," said Wetangโ€™ula.

He emphasized that the Kenya-Egypt relationship is multifaceted, encompassing energy, trade, security, economic, diplomatic, and socio-cultural dimensions.

Speaker Wetangโ€™ula said that through the Kenya-Egypt partnership, A hero irrigation scheme can be enhanced, as well as have protection on water catchment areas.

"We have had a long-standing relationship with Egypt, which led to the protection of the Lake Basin Water catchment area."

Hon.Wetangโ€™ula acknowledged that Egypt is part of COMESA, and as industrialists, they have a role to play across the region.

"We are willing to meet with our counterparts in Egypt and agree on how to cement our working relationship," said Speaker Wetangโ€™ula

Ambassador Hosni said that Egypt and Kenya could collaborate on several issues, particularly irrigation.

"We are ready to learn from what Kenya does best. We will have talks on how to implement Egypt's best irrigation system in Kenya."

The Ambassador said that Cabinet Ministers in charge of Agriculture and water resources from the two countries can agree and sign the Memorandum of Understanding on the effectiveness of irrigation practices.

"Our Parliaments can enact laws that will support the idea. We have a strong presence of Kenyans in Egypt, and all we can do is to enhance that relationship," said Hosni.

Hosni said irrigation is a game-changer in food security and enhanced food production.

"Over the years, we have increased food production in Egypt because of the modern irrigation practices. Through collaboration, such schemes can be implemented in Kenya," noted Hosni.
