Senator Hamida Kibwana’s Message on International Women’s Day

Senator Hamida Kibwana has marked International Women’s Day by celebrating the growing presence of women in Kenya’s leadership, highlighting the progress made in achieving gender equality. Kenya now boasts 29 elected women MPs, three female senators and seven women governors, alongside a female Chief Justice—an indication of shifting political dynamics.

“To show Kenya and the world that even wanawake wanaweza (women can), we must make the most of this opportunity. We have achieved significant milestones, including implementing aspects of the Beijing Declaration,” Senator Kibwana said.

As a key proponent of a proposed bill on gender-based violence (GBV), Kibwana has called for stricter penalties for perpetrators and stronger enforcement of existing laws, including the Matrimonial Property Act (2013), which protects women’s rights to shared property. She stressed the urgent need for robust legal frameworks that not only guarantee justice but also deter violations against women.

Beyond legal reforms, the senator emphasised the importance of economic empowerment, advocating for policies that enhance financial independence for women. She also urged greater investment in women’s leadership and innovation, recognising the intersection of gender, climate action and digital inclusion.

“As we discuss GBV, climate action, and digital innovation, we must reaffirm Kenya’s commitment to the Beijing Declaration. Achieving true gender equality requires collective action,” she added.
