Senate Speaker Rt. Hon. Amason Kingi today hosted a delegation from the Parliamentary Service Commission of the Transitional National Legislature of the Republic of South Sudan at Parliament Buildings as part of a benchmarking visit aimed at strengthening parliamentary governance and inter-legislative cooperation between the two nations.
Addressing the delegation, Sen Kingi emphasised the vital role of inter-parliamentary engagement, noting that both Kenya and South Sudan operate bicameral legislatures that serve as key pillars of democracy.
โAs bicameral legislatures, the Parliaments of Kenya and South Sudan have unique structures, experiences and histories that underline the sacrosanct role of Parliament in anchoring democratic rule and facilitating full expression of the will of citizens,โ Kingi said.
The discussions focused on the core mandates of Parliamentโlegislation, representation and oversightโwith particular emphasis on Kenyaโs Senate and its role in overseeing devolution. Kenyaโs devolution model, Kingi noted, had transformed governance by decentralising resources and strengthening service delivery at the grassroots level.
The session also reinforced the need for regional parliamentary collaboration in improving legislative effectiveness, governance structures and accountability. Kingi reaffirmed Kenyaโs commitment to supporting South Sudanโs parliamentary growth, stating, โOur collaboration will foster mutual learning and strengthen the role of Parliaments in addressing the aspirations of our people.โ
The South Sudanese delegation expressed appreciation for the insights gained, underscoring the relevance of Kenyaโs experience in shaping their legislative processes.
The visit forms part of broader regional efforts to enhance democratic institutions, governance and legislative capacity across East Africa.
