Nominated Senator Miraj Abdillahi has called for a status update on the implementation of a presidential directive issued in November 2024 regarding the transfer of gender desks from police stations to public hospitals. The directive aimed to ensure that victims of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) receive immediate medical attention and police support at the same time.
In a request for a statement, Sen. Miraj has asked the Senate Standing Committee on Labour and Social Welfare, chaired by Sen. Julius Murgor (West Pokot) to provide clarity on the progress of this transfer. She highlighted concerns that survivors of GBV often face delays in receiving critical services due to the current separation of police reporting and medical care facilities.
The Senator has urged the committee to provide an update on the status of the directiveโs implementation, detailing steps taken so far, challenges encountered and timelines for full execution. She emphasized the need for a seamless process that prioritizes the safety and well-being of GBV survivors, ensuring they receive both legal and medical assistance without unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles.
The request now awaits deliberation by the committee, which is expected to issue a comprehensive response on the matter.
