Sen. Prof. Tom Ojienda SC (Kisumu) has raised urgent concerns in the Senate, seeking statements from the Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations and the Standing Committee on Land, Environment and Natural Resources regarding key issues affecting Kisumu County.
In his request to the National Security Committee, Prof. Ojienda emphasized the dire working conditions of National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs), including Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, and Deputy County Commissioners. โThese officers are at the frontline of governance, yet they struggle with poor remuneration, inadequate medical insurance, and unclear retirement benefits. The government must address these challenges and ensure their welfare,โ he stated.
He also called for urgent measures to mitigate the impact of recent floods in Nyando and other affected areas. โFamilies have lost homes, livelihoods are at risk, and food insecurity is worsening. The government must provide a comprehensive report on disaster response, nutrition programmes, and long-term flood mitigation strategies,โ he urged.
Addressing the Land, Environment, and Natural Resources Committee, the Senator raised concerns about the Ombeyi dumpsite in Muhoroni, which has sparked fears over pollution and health risks. โThe dumpsite has affected air quality, agriculture, and water sources. I demand clarity on public participation, environmental impact assessments, and alternative waste management solutions,โ he stated.
Prof. Ojienda urged immediate action, stressing that Kisumu residents deserve better governance, sustainable environmental policies, and proactive disaster management. โWe must ensure that no Kenyan is left behind,โ he concluded.
