Sen Joe Nyutu (Murang'a) has called for urgent government intervention following rising insecurity and allegations of police misconduct in Murangโa County. He urged the Senate Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations to address a series of troubling incidents that have left residents fearing for their safety.
At the centre of his concerns is the death of Joychister Muthoni, a Grade 8 pupil at Wambwe Primary School, who died in Wambwe Village, Mathioya Constituency, on 7 January. The senator has demanded an update on the investigation, pressing authorities to ensure swift justice for her family.
Sen Nyutu also condemned the arrests of three local womenโEjidia Wairimu, Lucy Murage, and Nancy Njokiโon 25 February, after they spoke to the media about the death of baby Ezra Wamaitha in Maragua and the deteriorating security situation. He questioned the governmentโs commitment to upholding freedom of expression and protecting whistleblowers from intimidation.
Further scrutiny has been directed at James Wahome, a police officer formerly stationed at Kanyenyaini Police Station in Kangema. Residents accuse him of repeated assault and brutality between 30 December 2024, and 7 January 2025. The senator has demanded clarity on disciplinary measures taken against Wahome and called for accountability within the police force.
In addition, he has sought details on compensation for victims of police violence, urging authorities to take concrete steps to restore public trust in law enforcement.
