Senator Lomenen demands answers over Kenyan fishermen killed in Lake Turkana

Sen James Lomenen (Turkana) has called for an urgent update on the retrieval of bodies of Kenyan fishermen killed by suspected Ethiopian militiamen in Todonyang, along the Kenya-Ethiopia border, on 22 February.

Seeking a Statement from the Senate Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations, Sen Lomenen pressed the government to clarify the status of commitments made by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen during his visit to the region on 24 February. Among these pledges was the formation of a specialised security and rescue team to recover the bodies, provide medical assistance to survivors and deploy two modern boats to bolster search and rescue efforts.

The senator is demanding transparency on what progress has been made in retrieving the bodies and whether the promised security measures have been implemented. The attack has heightened fears among local fishing communities, who have long faced cross-border threats with little intervention from authorities.

Sen Lomenen insists that a swift response is critical, not only to ensure justice for the affected families but also to reinforce security along the volatile border and prevent further loss of life. The government’s response to this latest tragedy will be a test of its commitment to protecting Kenyan citizens in marginalised areas.
