Hospitals across Kenya are facing a severe blood shortage, prompting Sen Agnes Kavindu (Machakos) to call for urgent intervention. Seeking a Statement from the Senate Committee on Health, chaired by Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago, Sen Kavindu warned that the crisis is putting lives at risk as medical facilities struggle to meet transfusion demands.

The senator is pushing for a comprehensive review of the state of blood transfusion services, calling for an update on the availability of blood banks and essential laboratory reagents. Despite years of warnings, the shortage persists, raising questions about the effectiveness of government interventions. She wants clarity on the measures being taken by the Ministry of Health and the Kenya Blood Transfusion and Transplant Service to guarantee a steady and sufficient supply of blood.

Kavindu also highlighted the reluctance of Kenyans to donate blood, blaming widespread myths and misinformation for low donor turnout. She is urging the Committee to outline strategies for public education campaigns to dispel fears and encourage more donations.
