Senator Allan Chesang (Trans Nzoia) has sought a statement from the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Budget regarding the operationalisation of the Nawiri Fund by the Trans Nzoia County Government.

Sen. Chesang wants the Committee, in its report, to address, among other issues, the details of the fundโ€™s operationalisation, including the legal framework establishing it, regulatory compliance, its mandate and objectives. He also seeks clarification on whether public participation was conducted prior to its establishment, in line with Article 232(1)(d) of the Constitution.

The Committee, chaired by Sen. Ali Roba (Mandera) is expected to provide the Senate with information on the fundโ€™s target beneficiaries, the criteria used in selecting them and the priority areas considered during disbursement.

Additionally, the UDA Party lawmaker wants the Committee to disclose the total amount of money disbursed so far and provide a schedule indicating the list of all beneficiaries and the wards in which they reside.

While contributing to the request, Senators Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho) and William Kisang` (Elgeyo Marakwet) questioned the increasing trend of counties establishing numerous funds, which the alleged are being used to misappropriate public resources.

Both senators called for the formulation of clear and firm laws and policies to regulate the creation of such funds, which they believe often facilitate corruption.
