Senator Edwin Sifuna (Nairobi) has tabled a petition before the Senate on behalf of residents of the Korogocho Community who are facing eviction following the declaration of the Nairobi River Corridor as a Special Planning Area by the Nairobi City County Government.

Speaking on the floor of the House, Sen. Sifuna stated, โ€œThe residents of Korogocho are not against development or environmental restoration. However, they deserve fairness, dignity and a seat at the table where decisions about their lives are made.โ€

The petition, signed by over 30 affected residents, raises concerns over inadequate public participation, intimidation during eviction processes, unresolved compensation claims and lack of commitment to resettle those already evicted.

โ€œIt is unacceptable that a community is evicted without adequate notice, public participation, or clarity on compensation. We are dealing with human beings who have lived in these areas for decades,โ€ Sifuna emphasized.

The petitioners allege that efforts to engage the County Government and the Nairobi City County Executive Committee have been futile. They now seek the Senateโ€™s intervention to ensure humane evictions, compensation and meaningful community involvement in all planning decisions.

The petition has been committed to the Senate Committee on Land, Environment and Natural Resources for consideration.
