Senator (Prof.) Tom Ojienda, SC (Kisumu) has called for urgent intervention and accountability following the tragic loss of two Form Four students at Ramba Boys’ High School in Rarieda, Siaya County.
Requesting a Statement from the Standing Committee on Education, Senator Ojienda expressed deep concern over the incident in which two students lost their lives on 22nd March 2025 after a septic tank within the school premises collapsed. Reports indicate that the students had been standing on the tank along with others when it gave way, fatally trapping them and seriously injuring two more.
Terming the incident, a heartbreaking reminder of the dire infrastructural challenges faced by schools, particularly in rural areas, the Senator emphasized the need for immediate government response and long-term preventive measures.
Senator Ojienda sought responses to the following critical issues among them the circumstances surrounding the collapse of the septic tank and the immediate steps taken by the Ministry of Education in response to the tragedy. A nationwide audit of sanitation and related infrastructure in schools to assess compliance with safety standards and government measures to hold accountable any individuals or institutions found negligent and to institute safeguards against similar future incidents.
