Bungoma Senator David Wafula has requested a statement from the Senate Standing Committee on Roads, Transportation and Housing regarding the alarming state of the Bungoma–Mumias Road, which he says poses serious safety risks and disrupts essential transport services in the region.
“I rise, pursuant to Standing Order 53(1), to seek a statement from the Standing Committee on Roads, Transportation and Housing on a matter of inter-county concern regarding the deplorable condition of the Bungoma–Mumias Road,” said Senator Wafula.
He noted that the road serves as a key corridor linking Bungoma to Kakamega, Busia, Kisumu, Vihiga and other parts of Western Kenya. “Despite its importance, the road is currently in a deplorable state. It is riddled with numerous deep potholes and damaged sections, which pose serious safety risks and have led to significant disruptions for both public service and commercial transporters,” he added.
The Senator wants the Committee to clarify the immediate rehabilitation measures in place, the funds allocated for reconstruction in the 2024/2025 financial year, and any previous structural assessments conducted. He also seeks information on contractors involved and the Ministry’s plans for regular maintenance of the Bungoma–Mumias Road and other regional roads within the county.
