Senator Alexander Mundigi (Embu) has sought a statement from the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries regarding the infestation of white grubs commonly known as marindi, red mites and scale insects affecting muguka crops in Embu County.
“Muguka is a vital cash crop and a primary source of livelihood for many households, particularly in Mbeere North and Mbeere South sub-counties. The ongoing pest infestation has led to reduced yields, widespread crop damage and significant income losses for farmers,” Sen. Mundigi stated.
The Senator wants the Committee to outline, among other issues, the extent of the infestation in Embu County and the immediate measures taken to contain the pests, including whether agricultural extension services have been provided to farmers and access to approved pesticides facilitated.
Additionally, the Committee has been asked to specify both immediate and long-term interventions planned to safeguard and sustain muguka farming in the affected areas.
