Senator Sifuna seeks statement on Kisumu International Airport security breachParliament Buildings Wednesday, 04th March 2026 Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has sought a statement from the Standing Committee on Roads, Transportation, and Housing regarding grave security concerns at Kisumu International Airport. The request follows a troubling incident on Saturday, February 21st, 2026, when the airport was reportedly "besieged by goons". Senator Sifuna emphasized that such events jeopardize the facility's standing with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which mandates strict standards for protecting civil aviation against acts of unlawful interference. The legislator noted that the airport's immense potential to develop into a major cargo and passenger hub for East Africa is at risk if political activities similar to those witnessed on 21st February 2025 are repeated. The Nairobi Senator demanded a thorough review of the current safety protocols to determine if they comply with international standards. Specifically, he called for an investigation into the "circumstances under which unauthorized individuals gained access to and operated within the airport premises" and a clear report on the identified lapses in security enforcement. Senator Sifuna further urged the Committee to outline the "specific corrective actions and long-term remedial measures that will be implemented to prevent a recurrence of such breaches and to strengthen airport security governance going forward".
