Sen. Miraj Abdulrahman (Nominated) has asked the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to explain the alleged theft of 9,686,358 excise stamps from its custody raising fears of consumer safety, tax evasion, and counterfeit goods.

The theft comes after title deeds were stolen from the Government Printer by unknown persons in September 2024 and up to now no information has been provided regarding the outcome of the investigations.

While requesting a statement from the Standing Committee on Finance and Budget on the floor of the House today, Sen. Miraj tasked the Committee to investigate and report to the Senate the possible existence of a tax-evasion ring that may have infiltrated the KRAโ€™s systems, putting the governmentโ€™s tax collection measures in jeopardy.

The Legislator also asked the Sen. Ali Roba-led Committee to โ€œoutline the measures that the tax collection body has taken to mitigate the infiltration of its systemโ€ to stop further theft and flooding of counterfeit goods in the Kenyan market.

The Finance Committee will subsequently invite the Kenya Revenue Authorityโ€™s leadership to explain the theft and thereafter furnish the August House with a report regarding the safety of goods in the market.
