Sen. James Lomenen has requested a Statement from the Senate Standing Committee on Roads, Transportation, and Housing regarding the construction and upgrade of key roads in Turkana County.
The Senator is seeking clarification on the progress of the Lomut-Lokwamosing (B118) road and the Nginyang'-Lokori-Lokichar (A10) road, which are critical for connecting Turkana County to the rest of Kenya.
Sen. Lomenen noted that despite their importance in facilitating access to markets, healthcare, education, and other essential services, these roads remain in poor condition, often rendered impassable by heavy rains. He expressed concern over the long delay in implementing these projects, despite their designs being completed in 2013 and 2016, respectively.
The Senator urged the Committee to explain the reasons behind the delays and clarify whether the necessary updates on tender documents, design reviews, and Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) for the projects have been completed. He called for a clear timeline on when the construction will commence and be completed, emphasizing the need for measures to ensure timely implementation.
Additionally, Sen. Lomenen sought to understand what steps the Government is taking to address any potential adverse impacts of the projects as identified in the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.
He highlighted that improving road infrastructure in Turkana County is key to fostering economic development and ensuring better service delivery for residents.
