Senator Catherine Mumma has called on the Senate to push for the integration of sports and talent development into the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and to address delays in health insurance payments under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).

In a Statement request to the Senate Committee on Education, Sen Mumma urged the membership to outline policies supporting sports and talent development within the CBC framework. She called for details on infrastructure provisions, including training facilities and qualified coaches and asked the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to clarify how sports and creative talent are assessed in schools.

Turning to healthcare, Sen Mumma raised concerns over delays in SHIF payments to public hospitals, questioning why procedures in private facilities are processed faster. She requested the Senate Committee on Health to provide a county-by-county breakdown of registered SHIF beneficiaries, funds disbursed and an evaluation of the systemโ€™s efficiency. Additionally, she sought an explanation for deductions from public servantsโ€™ salaries while they are still required to make payments for services.

Sen Mumma also challenged the referral system, asking why private hospitals can act as both referrers and service providers, while public hospitals must follow a bureaucratic process. She called for strategic interventions to improve efficiency, reduce patient backlogs and ensure timely, quality healthcare for vulnerable citizens.
