Sen. Samson Cherarkey (Nandi) has decried the rising cases of hooliganism operating within county offices in various counties across the country.
This comes after gangs and goons accessed the office of the Eldoret City Manager and forcibly evicted him from the office and thereafter, harassed other staff in the presence of County Security Officers in Uasin-Gishu County.
While requesting a statement from the Standing Committee on National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations on the floor of the House today, Sen. Cherarkey tasked the Security Committee to update the Senate on the status of investigations into the Uasin-Gishu County headquarters incident and give reasons why the perpetrators have not been arrested to date.
“The incident happened in the full glare of the cameras. What actions have been taken by the police against those alleged to be the sponsors of this hooliganism?” Sen. Cherarkey wondered.
The second term legislator asked the Senator Fatuma Dullo-led Committee to state the number of culprits apprehended and arraigned before courts in similar incidences that took place in Nairobi, Isiolo, Nandi and Uasin-Gishu counties.
In addition, the Nandi Senator requested the Security Committee explain any actions taken against officers from Nairobi City County responsible for dumping garbage at the entrance of Stima Plaza in Nairobi due to unsettled bills owed to each other.
In the same breath, Senator Cherarkey also sought another statement from the Standing Committee on Health on the state of Kapsabet County Referral Hospital and the other health facilities in Nandi County.
The legislator asked the Health Committee to provide the current state of drug supply at Kapsabet County Referral Hospital and other health facilities in Nandi County and explain the reasons behind the persistent shortage of drugs in these facilities.
“The Health Committee must tell this House when the county government last procured hospital equipment and provide details on general maintenance work in wards and other service areas,” he requested.
He tasked the Senator Jackson Mandago-led Committee to explain the status of the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and the Return-to-Work Formula between healthcare workers and the county government in Nandi County and clarify why the county government has failed to harmonize promotions for doctors, nurses, clinical officers, and other health workers.
The Health Committee will subsequently conduct investigations on the matter and update the Senate on agreements in place to address ongoing strikes by clinical officers and the shortage of health workers across the county.
