Kenya-Iraq Parliamentary relations key, says Speaker Wetang’ula𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐓𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝟏𝟏𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓
National Assembly Speaker, Dr. Moses Wetang’ula has called for enhanced Kenya-Iraq Parliamentary diplomatic engagements.
The Speaker spoke this afternoon after meeting the Charge d’Affaires of the Republic of Iraq to Kenya, Dr. Akram Slaiman, who paid him a courtesy call at his office.
The discussions focused on enhancing the longstanding diplomatic ties between Kenya and Iraq, with a particular emphasis on parliamentary cooperation.
The meeting agreed to establish a Parliamentary Friendship Group between the two legislatures, aimed at deepening parliamentary diplomacy and strengthening democratic governance. This initiative is expected to foster greater collaboration between the two nations on legislative matters.
“Iraq, as the world’s fifth-largest oil producer, presents significant opportunities for trade in petroleum-based products. With the country experiencing increased stability following years of conflict, discussions highlighted the potential for enhanced economic cooperation, particularly in the energy sector”, noted Speaker Wetang’ula.
The Speaker reaffirmed its support for Iraq’s reconstruction efforts and expressed interest in exploring new avenues for trade and investment.
On his part, Dr. Slaiman reiterated Iraq’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Kenya in key sectors such as education, security, and trade. Notably, Iraq has extended scholarship opportunities to Kenyan students, further strengthening cultural and academic ties between the two nations.
Speaker Wetang’ula underscored the importance of ongoing dialogue and cooperation among Iraq and its neighbors, emphasizing that a peaceful Middle East contributes to global stability.
Both parties expressed optimism about the future of Kenya-Iraq relations, with a shared commitment to fostering deeper engagement and exploring new areas of collaboration.
