Speaker Wetang’ula launches new Muslim prayer room

In a gesture to demonstrate a commitment to religious inclusivity, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Moses Wetang’ula last evening presided over the opening of a new dedicated Muslim prayer room at Parliament Buildings.

The occasion which took place at sunset before the call to prayer which preceded the inaugural Parliamentary Iftar Dinner hosted by the two Speakers of Parliament, saw the coming together of prominent members of the Muslim community including Members of Parliament from both Houses, Muslim community leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, and Parliamentary staff.

The Iftar dinner provided a unique opportunity for the Muslim faithfuls to come together in the spirit of unity and togetherness during this Holy month of Ramadan. It also served as a moment of reflection and gratitude allowing those in attendance to break their fast together.

During the event, the distinguished guest speakers noted that the gesture of recognition of the Islamic religion exhibited Parliament’s commitment in promoting cultural and religious tolerance while fostering unity and inclusivity.

"We normally have the Annual Prayer Breakfast but it always seems to be one sided as it usually carries the theme of our Christian brothers and sisters, and we only seem to participate in the eating alone. However, this recognition serves to acknowledge us as Muslims and we support this move by Speaker Wetangula to institute the Iftar dinner as an annual event in Parliament”, remarked the Minority Leader in the National Assembly, Hon. Junet Mohammed.

On his part, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Iftar Dinner planning Committee, Hon. Omar Mwinyi extended his heartfelt gratitude to Speaker Wetang’ula and the Clerk of the National Assembly Mr. Njoroge for taking a significant step in accommodating the needs of the Muslim community by establishing a bigger prayer room within Parliament.

"This initiative is a testament to the values of inclusivity and respect for religious diversity in our institution, ensuring that all Members and staff have a conducive place for prayer and reflection. "

Hon. Mwinyi also acknowledged the support of Premier Bank, who through their CEO Mr. Osman Dualle, supported the event, noting that their generosity reflected the essence of Ramadhan—giving and sharing.
