The Selection Panel tasked with recruiting the next Chairperson and members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has completed its three-day interview process for the Chairperson position.

Led by Chairperson Dr. Nelson Makanda, the nine-member Panel interviewed all eleven shortlisted candidates. The interviews, held at the College of Insurance in South C, Nairobi, took place from Monday, March 24th to Wednesday, March 26th, 2025.

"We are pleased to report that all eleven shortlisted candidates participated in the interview process," Dr. Makanda stated to the media.

The candidates interviewed include Mr. Abdiqadir Lorot H. Ramadhan, Mr. Charles Ayako Nyachae, Ms. Anne Atieno Amadi, and Mr. Edward Katama Ngeywa, who were interviewed on Monday.

On Tuesday, March 25th, Mr. Erastus Edung Ethekon, Mr. Francis Kaikai Kissinger, Mr. Jacob Ngewele Muvengei, and Ms. Joy Brenda Masinde Mdivo faced the Panel to convince them of their suitability for the position.

Wednesday, March 26th saw Ms. Lilian Wanjiku Manegene, Mr. Robert Akumu Asembo, and Mr. Saul Simiyu Wasilwa occupy the hot seat.

Notably, all the candidates interviewed for the Chairperson are drawn from the legal profession, as provided in law.

Section 6 of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act stipulates that โ€œthe chairperson of the Commission shall be a person qualified to hold the office of judge of the Supreme Court under the Constitutionโ€.

In addition to evaluating candidates' qualifications, the Panel focused on their strategies for restoring electoral integrity and their adherence to Chapter 6 of the Constitution, which addresses personal integrity.

With the Chairperson interviews concluded, the Panel will now commence interviews for the shortlisted member positions. These interviews will begin tomorrow, Thursday, March 27th, 2025, and continue until Friday, April 25th, 2025.

Dr. Makanda reiterated the requirement for all shortlisted applicants to provide current and valid clearance certificates from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the Higher Education Loans Board, the Kenya Revenue Authority, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the Commission for University Education (for foreign degree holders), and Credit Reference Bureaus.

Upon completion of all interviews, the Panel, which has a 90-day mandate, is expected to submit two names to the President for the Chairperson position and nine names for the member positions. The President will then appoint one Chairperson and six members to form the IEBC.
