Mbeere North MP, Hon. Geoffrey Ruku, has bid farewell to the National Assembly following his nomination, vetting and subsequent approval by the House as the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programs.
In his final address to the House, Hon. Ruku conveyed his profound gratitude for the opportunity to represent his constituents and for the support he received throughout his two years and seven months in the House.
"It has been the honor of my life to serve my constituents in this Parliament for two years and seven months," Hon. Ruku stated.
He added that, "Let me also express my sincere appreciation to you, Hon. Speaker, my esteemed colleagues, and the Clerk of the National Assembly for the remarkable support you have accorded me."
During his time in the 13th Parliament, Hon. Ruku was an active member of both the Departmental Committee on Tourism and Wildlife and the Select Committee on Delegated Legislation.
As a first-time legislator, Hon. Ruku sponsored several bills and motions that are currently progressing through various stages of the legislative process.
Notably, he championed the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes (Amendment) Bill of 2023, which proposes replacing stringent criminal penalties for minor procurement infractions with administrative and professional conduct measures aligned with existing employment laws.
Additionally, Hon. Ruku spearheaded several motions, including one advocating for the adoption of a government-to-government model for the procurement and distribution of subsidized fertilizer to farmers.
He also sponsored a motion that called for the utilization of government-to-government agreements to facilitate the local assembly of essential equipment for electricity connections.
"As I transition from this House, I am privileged to have gained invaluable insights through the legislative discourse and motions I have been involved in while fulfilling my constitutional mandate," Hon. Ruku remarked.
In his closing remarks, Hon. Ruku pledged to uphold the same level of dedication in his new role, committing to serve the nation with integrity and diligence.
"As the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programs, I promise to be diligent and true to my duty to the country," he affirmed, quoting Luke 12:48: βTo whom much is given, much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.β
