Notification from the Speaker on the demise of Hon. Charles Were, MP, Member for Kasipul ConstituencyIt is with profound shock and unspeakable sorrow that I have this evening received the devastating news of the fatal shooting of Hon. Ong’ondo Were, the Member of Parliament for Kasipul Constituency, in an incident that occurred along Ngong Road near City Mortuary, Nairobi.
The late Hon. Were was serving his second term representing the people of Kasipul constituency having been elected to the National Assembly in 2017 and re-elected in 2022 General Elections.
This callous and cowardly act committed under the cover of night has robbed the nation of a distinguished legislator, a fearless advocate for his constituents, and a man deeply committed to the democratic ideals and service to the people he represented.
The loss of Hon. Were is not just a tragedy to his family and the people of Kasipul but also a big loss to the people of Kenya.
As we mourn our departed dear friend and colleague, I call upon our security and investigative agencies to undertake thorough investigations to bring to book those responsible for this heinous and cowardly act.
In this time of national grief, I urge all Kenyans to remain calm and allow due process to take its course. The leadership of Parliament is actively engaged and will continue to monitor the progress of investigations while remaining in close contact with the bereaved family.
On behalf of the National Assembly, the Parliamentary Service Commission, and in my own capacity, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Hon. Ong’ondo Were, the people of Kasipul, and indeed all Members of Parliament.
May his courage, service, and sacrifice never be forgotten.
May his soul rest in eternal peace. Amen.
