Residents of Trans Nzoia County have urged the government to establish a cereal board in the region, emphasizing that agriculture remains the backbone of the county’s economy.
During a public participation forum organized by the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee, residents from the five constituencies of Trans Nzoia—Cherangany, Kiminini, Saboti, Kwanza, and Endebess—gathered to voice their priorities for the upcoming national budget.
In a collective appeal, residents expressed concern over delayed access to fertilizers and seeds, citing distribution challenges in several constituencies that have disrupted the planting season.
“We have a railway line that can be used to transport seeds and fertilizers. Road transport has proven unreliable, and many farmers are left out. We propose that all agricultural inputs be transported in bulk by rail to ensure timely and equal distribution,” said one resident.
The engagement, chaired by Endebess MP Hon. (Dr.) Robert Pukose, also brought forth calls for improved infrastructure across the county. Residents highlighted the need for roads to be tarmacked, better school facilities, enhanced healthcare services, expanded market spaces for farm produce, and increased access to electricity.
In addition to public submissions, the Committee received memoranda from civil society organizations, youth groups, persons with disabilities, special interest groups, and professional associations.
All submissions collected during the forum will be compiled into a report to be presented before the National Assembly.
