The Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) has established a foundation aimed at supporting the education of bright students living with disabilities, the National Assembly Committee on Cohesion and Equal Opportunities has been informed.
KPC Managing Director, Mr. Joe Sang, told the Committee that the newly established Inuka Foundation will provide funding for the education of students with disabilities and those from underprivileged backgrounds.
“In an effort to support Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs) in our society, the company has proactively established the Inuka Foundation,” Mr. Sang said during a session chaired by Nakuru County MP, Hon. Liza Chelule.
He added, “Each year, the Foundation sponsors secondary and university education for two bright students selected from across the country.”
Mr. Sang informed the Committee that since its inception, the Foundation has benefitted 735 students through its education programme.
“This is part of the company’s broader efforts to ensure that less privileged children have access to education, which is a fundamental right,” he said.
While commending the initiative, Hon. Chelule raised concerns over KPC’s non-compliance with constitutional requirements mandating that at least five percent of an organization’s workforce be persons living with disabilities.
“From your report, it is evident that you have not met the five percent requirement for employing persons with disabilities,” she noted.
The report submitted by Mr. Sang showed that only 54 employees—representing four percent of the workforce—are registered as PLWDs, falling short of the constitutional threshold.
Hon. Chelule emphasized that the company had no valid reason for failing to meet the requirement, particularly given the high number of PLWDs facing poverty and marginalization.
In response, Mr. Sang said KPC is committed to addressing the gap and will collaborate with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) during future recruitment processes.
“To help bridge the gap, KPC informs the NCPD of all arising vacancies so they can recommend qualified members,” he said.
