Senate Justice Committee Leadership elected: Sigei retains Chair, Maina elected Vice-Chair๐๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐๐จ๐ง๐๐๐ฒ, ๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐๐๐
The Senate Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee unanimously re-elected Senator Hillary Wakili Sigei (Bomet) as chairperson and elected Senator Veronica Maina (Nominated) as vice chairperson during elections held today following the nomination of new members to the committee.
In his acceptance speech, Senator Sigei expressed gratitude for the continued trust of his colleagues, stating, "Thank you Hon. Members for the trust and confidence in my Chairmanship. I thank you for re-electing me and congratulate Sen. Veronica Maina on her election as the V. Chair."
Senator Maina, acknowledging her surprise at the election, pledged to uphold the committee's high standards, saying, "I did not expect to be elected to this position but pledge to work extremely hard to make sure that the committee continues shining as the committee has been rated as the best-performing committee in the Senate."
The committee welcomed new members including Senators Prof. Tom Ojienda (Kisumu), Daniel Maanzo (Makueni) and Crystal Asige (Nominated). They replace outgoing members Senators Catherine Mumma (Nominated), Fatuma Dullo Fatuma (Isiolo) and Hamida Kibwana (Nominated).
Established under Standing Order 218(3) of the Senate Standing Orders, the Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee is mandated to address constitutional affairs, the organization and administration of law and justice, elections, the promotion of leadership principles, ethics and integrity, agreements, treaties and conventions and the implementation of constitutional provisions on human rights.
