The Senate Standing Committee on Trade, Industrialization and Tourism, chaired by Sen. Issa Boy Juma (Kwale), held a crucial engagement with the Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya to deliberate on policy and legislative priorities aimed at strengthening the cooperative and MSME sectors.
The session, attended by Principal Secretaries Patrick Kilemi (Cooperatives) and Susan Auma Mangโeni (MSMEs), provided a platform for the committee to assess ongoing government initiatives and explore legislative interventions that enhance governance, financial inclusion and economic growth.
Reaffirming its mandate over trade, industrialization, tourism and investment, the committee emphasized the urgent need for stronger oversight in cooperative governance. Discussions centered on reviewing the Cooperative Societies Act and the Sacco Societies Act (2008) to bolster accountability, transparency and public trust in SACCOs.
The committee assured that it will work closely with the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs to enact policies and legislative reforms that drive inclusive economic growth. Moving forward, the committee will continue to provide oversight and legislative support to strengthen MSMEs, cooperatives and trade policies for the benefit of all Kenyans.
Alongside the Chairperson, the session was attended by Vice Chairperson Sen. Esther Okenyuri (Nominated), Sen. Okiya Omtatah (Busia), Sen. George Mbugua (Nominated), Sen. John Methu (Nyandarua) and Sen. Hamida Kibwana (Nominated).
