The Senate Committee on Delegated Legislation has called on the Mombasa County Government to comprehensively review all existing regulations and identify those that are outdated or have exceeded their operational timelines. The committee emphasized the importance of aligning county governance with current legal frameworks to promote effective service delivery.

During a meeting held in Mombasa with Governor Abdullswamad Nassir, the Committee, led by Senator Mwenda Gataya (Tharaka Nithi) advised the County Executive to ensure all necessary regulations are up to date. The Senators stressed that having clear and current regulations is crucial for addressing governance challenges and enhancing accountability at the county level.

“We recommend a thorough review of all the county’s regulations to ensure that every operation is legally compliant,” said Senator Gataya. “This will not only improve service delivery but also strengthen the legal foundation of your County’s operations.”

Governor Nassir welcomed the Committee's guidance expressing appreciation for the Senate`s efforts in safeguarding Devolution. He assured the Committee that his administration is committed to complying with all legal requirements to effectively serve the residents of Mombasa.

“We are grateful to the Senate for its oversight and support in strengthening Devolution,” said Governor Nassir. “My administration is committed to upholding the law and ensuring that our policies and regulations meet the standards set by legislation.”

Earlier in the day, the Senate Committee met with Mombasa County Assembly members, led by the County Assembly Speaker. The meeting focused on issues related to Devolution, legislative oversight, and the enactment of laws. Senators encouraged MCAs to remain steadfast in their legislative roles and to prioritise the needs of Mombasa residents.

In response, MCAs called on the Senate to support them in securing adequate financial resources. They noted that sufficient funding would enhance their capacity to independently perform their oversight and legislative duties without undue influence from the Executive.

Following their engagements in Mombasa, the Committee is scheduled to visit Kilifi County on Wednesday for similar discussions with the County leadership.

Present during the meetings were Committee Chairperson Sen. Mwenda Gataya (Tharaka Nithi), Vice Chair Sen. Danson Mungatana (Tana River), Sen. Issa Juma Boy (Kwale), Sen. Julius Murgor (West Pokot), Sen. Betty Montet, Sen. Joyce Korir, and Sen. Daniel Maanzo (Makueni).
