Homa Bay CountyTuesday, 29th April 2025
The Senate Committee on Lands, Environment and Natural Resources, led by Senator Karen Nyamu (Vice Chairperson), conducted a fact-finding mission in Homa Bay County today, following a statement by Senator Beatrice Ogola regarding concerns over waste disposal practices by Sukari Industries in Ndhiwa Sub-County.
The Committee’s mandate is to provide a detailed report on the specific locations and methods used for disposing both liquid and solid waste produced by Sukari Industries. Particular attention is being paid to the treatment process of liquid waste and whether it aligns with environmental standards. The team will furnish the Senate with evidence to assess the effectiveness and compliance of the company’s waste management systems.
In addition to technical assessments, the Committee engaged with local community members and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to address ongoing concerns about the potential environmental risks posed by industrial pollutants in the area.
The Committee also extended its oversight mission to Kisii County, where it deliberated on a petition from representatives of Mwabundusi land squatters in Bobaracho Ward.
Senator Nyamu reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to environmental justice and sustainable land use, emphasizing that findings from both visits will inform a comprehensive report to be tabled in the Senate.
